The Compassionate Birth Network's gathering this week continued our educational focus on how birth professionals and staff can compassionately support women and girl survivors of sexual violence--part three in a series since 2020. This is especially critical during the perinatal period (pregnancy, childbirth, and soon thereafter).
The gathering was co-hosted by our Mexican partner, Luna Maya Midwifery and featured subject matter expert Kim McQuoid, CNM, FNP and trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). GFH was thrilled to offer interpretation in Haitian Kreyol and Spanish for the first time.

Themes included: how to set up or "diagnose" existing organizational programs and policies to protect patients who may have experienced sexual trauma; how birth workers can recognize signs of intimate partner violence (IPV), and how to sensitively communicate with suspected survivors during pregnancy and birth.
Follow up plans include sharing a recorded role play by Luna Maya midwives, handouts from the session, and other resource materials.
