Voice & Choice in Action: Luna Maya, Mexico

Writer's picture: Kay SandbergKay Sandberg

Project Partner Luna Maya operates two midwifery-based birth centers ("Casas de Parto" in Spanish) and hosted an important global conference in Mexico City this month to share best practices and standards for birth centers, with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

Cris Alonso, Founder/Director of Luna Maya at the birth home in Mexico City, proudly holding the book "Spaces to Birth Differently", recently published (Spanish only) by Luna Maya and primary author Dr. Georgina Sanchez Ramirez. More soon on the outcomes of this important conference to enable midwifery care to flourish in Mexico and guarantee "voice and choice"

for Mexican women, whether they live in "El Jefe" (nickname for Mexico City) or Chiapas, the southernmost state and location of Luna Maya's first birth center (www.lunamaya.org). It's a beautiful model for "femi-focal" (women-centered) care! What a joy to have participated!
